What PT Taught Me About Business

About 3 months ago, I tore my ACL and had surgery to repair it. Now, I’m going through physical therapy to regain full use of my knee. While often called “PT,” I call it Physical Torture. It’s tough! I leave sessions exhausted, but I know I’m on the path to full recovery. These grueling sessions have provided invaluable business lessons.

PT Business Lessons

Preparation and Readiness: Showing up prepared is crucial for efficiency and productivity. I often see people at early morning PT sessions in inappropriate attire — college kids in Crocs, or a woman in heeled sandals. REALLY?! If you’re not dressed for the gym, you’re unprepared. The same goes for the office: wear appropriate attire and bring the right tools (like a charged phone!).

Positive Attitude: Maintaining a positive attitude fosters a better environment and personal growth. There’s always a complainer in the room, but who wants to listen to complaints? PT is tough and uncomfortable, but complaining doesn’t change that. At work, pushing ourselves to learn new skills and try new things outside our comfort zone is crucial for growth.

100% Effort: Giving 100% effort is key for long-term success and recognition. I see people dressed appropriately and not complaining but doing the bare minimum. They may recover eventually, but it will take longer, or they might never fully recover. In business, those who put in the bare minimum don’t get promoted or seen as team players. Consistent hard work and commitment are essential for success.

In summary, my physical therapy journey has taught me to approach business endeavors with commitment, preparation, and wholehearted effort. By translating these lessons to the workplace, I am confident in achieving full recovery from my injury and long-term success in my career.
