Champagne Problems

While at my hair salon appointment recently, I struck up a conversation with a fellow customer, where she began detailing to me her struggles while living through a home renovation. She vented about cost overruns, delays, and frustrations from every step of the process. The hairdresser working on my hair leaned in and whispered to me, “psst, champagne problems.” It was a kind reminder from a trusted confidant that, while our daily struggles may seem significant in the moment, they are often insignificant in the grand scheme of life.

When we take a step back, and peer out from our individual and limited perspectives, we can recognize that so many others are dealing with far weightier challenges. People around us, locally and globally, are dealing with so much more — climate disasters, school shootings, and even wars.

I want to challenge us all to be more intentional about putting things in perspective. Sure, grappling with a home renovation, having to transition from remote work back to in-office, or stumbling in a presentation might feel like the end of the world. In reality, these are really just “champagne problems.” When I find myself dealing with a “champagne problem” and take a moment to find perspective, I am able to calm down and see these issues as minor and solvable, instead of allowing them to consume me.

Are you stressing over something that could possibly be resolved with a heartfelt chat, an apology, or just a bit more prep? Picture how relieved you’ll feel on the other side of the problem. Then, make a plan to tackle it head-on, so you can get back to what truly matters. Give yourself a deadline and take action! Because, really, overcoming these challenges is key to finding your happy place and success. 🥂🍾
